The history of Sonneck

It all began in the 1960s, when Königsleiten was still a small alpine village. In 1968, a small hut was built on the eastern edge of the village, just before the drop down into the Salzach Valley. Helmut Tannenberger built the original ski hut, which was initially called Krimmlblick. In 1969, Trudl Strasser renamed the house Sonneckalm and from then on provided food and drink for hungry and thirsty hikers.

In 1971, Maria Rottensteiner bought the Sonneckalm. Next to the restaurant, a small shop, a ski rental, and the village’s postal service were established. The first public telephone was installed in the house, and Grandpa Hans entertained guests with his accordion. Many lively celebrations made the Sonneckalm a central meeting place in Königsleiten.

In 1976, their son Hansi took over the business and expanded the hut a year later. In 1980, Peter and Greti Rieder purchased the Sonneckalm. Numerous modernizations followed: in 1989, the kitchen wing was rebuilt; in 1993, the office area was added and the ski rental was enlarged; in 1996, a carport was added; and in 1997, the pizzeria “Al Sole” was added.

In October 2001, work began on the new apartment building. Despite the onset of winter in November, construction progressed rapidly, and the topping-out ceremony took place on December 12, 2001. The building was ready for occupancy in late summer 2002, and the first guest moved into the new apartment on December 14, 2002.

After the 2007/2008 winter season, the Sonneckalm and the sports shop were demolished. In their place now stands the 4* Sonneck Apartment Hotel with a sports shop, ski and sports equipment rental, breakfast buffet, bright, friendly apartments with free internet, indoor pool, two wellness oases, fitness room, meditation room, and children’s playroom –  everything you need for an unforgettable vacation in the heart of the Alps.
